Step 4 – Go from A to B
The fourth step is going from point A to point B.
Decide which route you’re taking to the next control. Look ahead and pick a clearly visible object. Notice the different features that you pass along the way to ensure that you’re on the right track.
Remember to always keep the map aligned with the surrounding terrain, and to turn it when you change direction.
It's crucial to have a basic understanding of the map scale, i.e. the ratio between the distance on the map and the distance on the ground. For example, if it’s 1:10 000 (which is the most commonly used scale in orienteering), it means that 1 centimeter equals to 100 meters on the ground.
